Dahlia Companion is a free tool built by Flourish Brighton (Catherine Lane, Brighton, UK) to help dahlia growers plan their beds. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and your rights under UK GDPR.
1. Who we are
Data controller: Catherine Lane, trading as Flourish Brighton / Happy Dahlias, Brighton, East Sussex, UK. You can reach us at [email protected].
2. What data we collect
We collect only what you choose to give us:
Email address — if you sign up for seasonal reminders via the form on the homepage. We store this to send you a handful of timely emails a year about dahlia growing.
Anthropic API key — if you use the "Ask Professor Dahlia" AI chat feature. Your key is stored in your own browser's localStorage only. It is never sent to our servers.
Your planting plan — built and stored entirely in your browser. We do not see or store your plan on any server.
We do not use third-party analytics, advertising trackers, or social media pixels.
3. Cookies and local storage
This site uses browser localStorage (not traditional cookies) to remember your preferences within a single browser. Specifically:
dc_api_key — your Anthropic API key (if entered)
dc_signups — your email address (if you sign up for reminders)
dc_cookie_ok — a flag recording that you have acknowledged this notice
These values never leave your device except where explicitly described above. You can clear them at any time by clearing your browser's site data.
4. How we use your email
If you subscribe to seasonal reminders, we will use your email address solely to send you growing tips and planting reminders for dahlias — typically 3–5 emails per year. We will never sell, rent or share your email with any third party. You can unsubscribe at any time by replying to any email or contacting us directly.
Legal basis: legitimate interest in providing the service you have signed up for, and your consent given at the point of sign-up.
5. AI chat (Professor Dahlia)
If you use the Professor Dahlia chat feature, your questions are sent directly from your browser to the Anthropic API using your own API key. We do not receive, store or process your conversations. Anthropic's own privacy policy governs how they handle those requests — see anthropic.com/privacy.
6. Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, object to processing, and lodge a complaint with the ICO (Information Commissioner's Office, ico.org.uk). To exercise any right, email us at [email protected] and we will respond within 30 days.
7. Data retention
We retain email addresses on our mailing list until you unsubscribe. Browser-stored data is retained until you clear it. There is no server-side database of planting plans.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top of the page will always show when it was last revised. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
